The $499 M4 Mac mini is a repair listing. The usable floor is $625

The $499 result was a repair listing. The Sept. 2 floor and median are historical; compare any current used offer with a new M6 you can actually obtain.

In-stock asking prices observed Sept. 2, 2026, for the base 16GB/256GB M4 Mac mini: 134 used, open-box and refurbished offers across seven sources, parts-only listings excluded.

Where does the ask you're holding fall?

The $499 M4 Mac mini was a parts and repair listing, not a deal. The Sept. 2 floor and median are historical; compare the exact used offer with an obtainable new M6 before buying. On Oct. 3, Micro Center listed a new M6 16GB/256GB for $699.99, pickup only, with local stock unverified. This is one retailer observation, not a national price floor.

The dollar bands below describe Sept. 2 asks. They are not current buy signals; compare the exact used listing with a new M6 you can obtain, including pickup, shipping, warranty and returns.

Tracker reading through Sept. 15: 69 matched M4 offers down 5.7%, and what it means for one listing

Supports An ask from $749 to $825

Slightly down since Apple’s Aug. 25 announcement. Measured from their Aug. 21-25 asks to their latest asks through Sept. 15, the 69 M4 Mac mini offers our tracker priced on both sides of the announcement were down 5.7% in total, a median of $50 per offer. That reading spans every M4 mini configuration and condition. The exact 16GB/256GB panel behind the ladder above has not been rerun since Sept. 2.

Tracker reading, all M4 mini configurations Through Sept. 15
Offers priced before and after Aug. 25 69
Ended lower 44
Unchanged 18
Ended higher 7
Change in their total asks −5.7%
Median change per offer −$50
In-stock secondhand asks, Sept. 15 445
Median ask, Sept. 15 $820
Lowest ask, Sept. 15 $573

What that means for a 16GB/256GB listing:

  • Nothing in the tracker shows a rise. The matched change starts from Aug. 21-25 asks, so it cannot show how much of the drop came after the Sept. 2 ladder was built. It does show matched asks mostly falling rather than climbing, and a listing still at its late-August ask has not followed that drop and is worth an offer below it.
  • The $820 median is not evidence of a price rise. It includes larger-memory and larger-storage machines, so it cannot be compared with the $749 base-configuration median.
  • An ask under $625 has appeared. The $573 low is one listing, and this reading does not record its configuration. Apply the ladder’s first row: confirm memory, storage, condition and listing type before counting any sub-$625 ask as a discount.

The same tracker reading for the M4 Pro mini and the Mac Studios is in what waiting has cost, by machine.

Historical channel medians and buyer protection for a $700-$750 machine

Supports An ask from $625 to $749 · An ask from $749 to $825

The ladder prices a listing; this is where the listing comes from. Each median below is what that channel asked for a base 16GB/256GB M4 in our Aug. 21-26, 2026 snapshot, carried unchanged from our guide to where to buy a used or refurbished Mac mini: asking prices from that week, not completed sales and not current offers. A channel median says where that channel sat, not what a listing costs today, and the Swappa and PayMore figures rest on six listings each.

Channel Base M4 median, Aug. 21-26 Where that lands on the ladder What protects you
Swappa $721 (n=6) Under the Sept. 2 $749 median; a historical comparison, not a current target A 12-month limited warranty from the seller, not Swappa, and only on listings that show it
PayMore $767 (n=6) Above the median, in the typical quarter A 30-day limited warranty and return period; its stores let you inspect the machine before paying
Apple certified refurbished From $849, Sept. 2 check; no Mac mini listed Sept. 16 Top quarter, but that $849 machine was a 16GB/512GB M4, not the 256GB configuration priced here A one-year limited warranty from Apple; stock changes between visits
eBay $850 (n=75) Top quarter, within $74 of the $899 M6 list The Money Back Guarantee, if an item doesn’t arrive or doesn’t match its listing; there is no grading, so vet the seller
Amazon Renewed $999 (n=16) Above the $899 M6 list, and the highest channel median we measured The Renewed Guarantee: refund or replacement within 90 days of receipt, excluding accidental damage
Buy nothing used $899 Apple list for a new M6 as of Aug. 25; $0 to keep the Mac you have Recheck today’s obtainable new alternatives; the old $825 cutoff is insufficient Apple’s new-machine warranty, or a machine that already works

Amazon Renewed is the returns choice, not the price choice: its Aug. 21-26 median sat $100 above the $899 Apple lists for a new M6, and that $999 is a median ask from that week, not a current Amazon price. Two options on that channel. The first, Amazon Renewed Mac mini search results, opens search results rather than a product: they mix chips, memory and storage, so confirm 16GB and 256GB on the listing itself. The second, one exact listing for the machine this page prices, opens a single product: an M4 with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, 16GB of memory and a 256GB SSD, sold as Renewed Premium. Its price, seller and stock did not display when we read it on Sept. 16, as the buy-now table notes, so compare what Amazon charges with an obtainable new M6 before you buy. The $749 used median and Swappa’s $721 channel median are historical. The Swappa, PayMore, eBay and Apple certified refurbished terms were checked Sept. 15, 2026, at the policies linked from the channel guide; the Amazon Renewed Guarantee page did not load that day, so its terms come from Amazon’s published help-page summary, and the new M6’s one-year warranty is Apple’s standard new-Mac term.

At the time, timing mattered: before Sept. 22 a used ask bought a machine a preordered M6 could not yet replace. The one precedent we had measured is Apple’s Aug. 25 announcement. In the 11 days that followed, a matched 127-offer panel of outgoing minis and Studios fell 10.7%; through Sept. 15, a separate 134-offer matched panel of the four replaced models was down 11.9%, and the base M4 mini was the smallest mover of the four. Those are asking prices rather than completed sales, and one prior episode rather than a forecast of what the ship date did. The exact 16GB/256GB panel has not been rerun since Sept. 2, so these figures cannot decide an October purchase.

One listing is a floor, not a market

How thin the $625 floor is: asks by price threshold
Price threshold, Sept. 2 Offers Share of panel
$625 or less 1 0.7%
$650 or less 4 3.0%
$700 or less 28 20.9%
$750 or less 73 54.5%
$800 or less 93 69.4%
All qualified asks 134 100%

The $625 floor was real but thin: one Swappa listing, or 0.7% of the panel. Three more machines were at $650. A buyer who treats $625 as the normal price will spend more time waiting than shopping.

The useful range is wider. On Sept. 2 the lower quartile was $706.51, the median was $749 and the upper quartile was $824.75. That means half the qualified asks sat between roughly $707 and $825. A sub-$700 offer is a real discount, but it is not extraordinary: 28 listings, or 20.9% of the panel, met that threshold.

Why the $499 result failed

Why the $499 result failed: a parts listing in the wrong evidence class

Supports An ask below $625

The excluded eBay listing from the Sept. 2 panel was titled “Mac mini (2024) – Apple M4 10-Core GPU – 16GB RAM 256GB SSD – For Parts & Repair.” Its normalized condition and its condition grade were both parts-only. The older broad category was used.

The historical side of the price tracker already read the observation-level condition and rejected parts-only machines. The live market summary used the broad category. That disagreement is why the same listing could be excluded from history and still set the displayed current floor. The exporter now applies the detailed condition evidence to both, and the panel was rerun without the parts listing.

This is also why a marketplace’s lowest number needs a title check. An extreme low can be a damaged machine, a current auction bid, a deposit, a parts listing or a configuration error. A price becomes useful only after the offer is placed in the right evidence class.

The used M4 discount was $150 at the Sept. 2 median

Supports An ask from $625 to $749 · An ask of $825 or more

Apple announced the new base M6 Mac mini with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage at a $899 starting price, with a Sept. 22 ship date.

Against that exact configuration, the Sept. 2 used M4 median saved $150, or 16.7%. The $625 floor saved $274, or 30.5%, but only one observed seller offered it. Twenty-four M4 asks were already at or above the M6’s $899 list price. In that September window, those asks bought earlier availability, not a hardware bargain.

The Sept. 2 panel suggested $700-$750 for an ordinary secondhand machine, but that is not an October buy range. A new M6 was listed for $699.99 at Micro Center on Oct. 3 for pickup only; local stock was unverified. Recheck an obtainable exact new configuration, the used machine’s condition, total cost, warranty and return policy. If the M6 replaces a Mac mini you already own, compare its trade-in value with what selling it nets before you order.

The number to remember is not $625, either. It is $749: the middle of the qualified asking market on Sept. 2. The floor tells you what is possible once. The distribution tells you what a buyer can reasonably expect to find.

Budget for the desk, too. The M4 mini has no USB-A ports, Apple lists its front USB-C ports for USB 3 only and its in-box list is the mini and a power cord. Our Mac mini desk setup guide shows which adapter, if any, your keyboard and mouse need and which ports carry video. Try the monitor or TV you already own before buying one; every Apple silicon Mac mini has an HDMI port. Either Mac needs a screen, so buying one doesn’t erase the used discount, but it can cost more than that discount saves: the median used M4 ask was $150 under the M6’s $899 list on Sept. 2, while the 27-inch Dell monitors in our comparison by pixel density and price were $259.99 for 1440p and $349.99 for 4K at Dell’s Sept. 15 prices, not Amazon prices. We add the whole desk up, row by row and with the free route first, in what a Mac mini still needs.

Sources and dates
  • The ladder, threshold table, verdicts and M6 discount figures are in-stock asking prices observed Sept. 2, 2026, for the base 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB memory and 256GB SSD M4 Mac mini.
  • Explicit shipping is included when captured.
  • The qualified panel contains 134 used, open-box and refurbished offers across seven sources.
  • Parts-only, new, auction, completed-sale, incomplete-configuration and plausibility-flagged records are excluded.
  • Asking prices are not completed sales, and the floor is one listing rather than a repeatable market price.
  • That exact-configuration panel has not been rerun since Sept. 2.
  • The figures in the since-late-August section come from our Mac desktop price tracker's catalog with a latest observation of Sept. 15, 2026: secondhand in-stock asking prices plus explicit shipping, one observation per listing URL and condition per day, with auction bids, completed sales, parts-only, new, unclassified and implausibly low records excluded.
  • They span every M4 Mac mini configuration and condition, and that reading does not record the configuration of its $573 lowest ask.
  • The matched figures compare each listing URL and condition's last eligible ask on or before Aug. 25 (observations Aug. 21-25) with its latest eligible ask from Aug. 26 through Sept. 15, so they cannot separate movement before and after Sept. 2.
  • The channel medians in the where-to-buy section are the Aug. 21-26, 2026 snapshot carried unchanged from our channel-by-channel guide and were not rerun here; buyer-protection terms for Swappa, PayMore, eBay and Apple's certified refurbished warranty come from that guide's Sept. 15, 2026 check of the policies it links, except the Amazon Renewed Guarantee, whose page did not load that day and whose terms come from Amazon's published help-page summary; the new M6's one-year warranty is Apple's standard new-Mac term.
  • Apple's certified refurbished $849 figure is a direct Sept. 2 check of Apple's U.S. store rather than part of that snapshot; the same store's Mac mini refurbished page, read Sept. 16, 2026, listed no Mac mini.
  • The $899 M6 price is from Apple's Aug. 25 announcement, and Apple's Mac mini store page still showed availability starting Sept. 22 when read Sept. 16.
  • The Amazon links are paid: one opens search results and the others open exact products.
  • The Renewed listing was re-read Sept. 16, 2026; its title names an M4 with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, 16GB of memory and a 256GB SSD, sold as Renewed Premium, but its price, seller and stock did not display, so no Amazon price is quoted for it.
  • The $879.99 Amazon preorder price for the new M6 16GB/256GB is from MacRumors' Sept. 16, 2026 deals report.
  • The 10.7% figure is a matched-panel change in asking prices for outgoing models through Sept. 5, and the 11.9% figure is the same method through Sept. 15 on a separate 134-offer matched panel; neither is a completed-sale figure.
  • The local AI paragraph below the ladder carries its figures from our guide to whether your computer can run a local model, checked Sept. 16, 2026; the 10.7GB of usable memory applies the macOS GPU reserve developers report, not an Apple specification, model minimums are canirun.ai estimates at roughly 4-bit and the 24.11 tokens-a-second figure is one contributor's llama.cpp run of a 7B model on an M4, not a Hard Bargains test.
  • The new M6 16GB/256GB MHQK4LL/A $699.99 pickup-only ask, one-per-household limit and 15-day computer return window were read from Micro Center's product page Oct. 3, 2026; local stock was not checked.
