Which monitor to buy for a Mac mini: 4K, 5K or what you already own

A 27-inch 5K screen divides exactly into a 2× desktop at the familiar 1440p size; 4K and 1440p screens trade that for price. Choose the density first, then the size and price.

In this guide: 7 sections
  1. Choose by pixel density first
  2. Try what you already own first
  3. Connection check by model
  4. The models checked Sept. 15
  5. Size and desk space
  6. What to buy by budget
  7. Check it before the return window closes

The short answer: Try the screen you already own first; every Apple silicon Mac mini has an HDMI port. When you buy, choose by pixel density. A 27-inch 5K monitor (5120×2880) divides exactly into a 2560×1440 workspace at 2×, so macOS draws each point with a 2-by-2 block of pixels without shrinking your desktop. A 27-inch 4K monitor costs far less, but it divides exactly only into a 1920×1080 workspace, with larger text. Matching the 1440p layout on it takes a scaled setting, and Apple says scaled resolutions “may affect performance.” A 27-inch 1440p monitor gives the 2560×1440 workspace at 1× for the least money.

Choose by pixel density first

Prices are U.S. manufacturer prices checked Sept. 15. Pixels per inch (ppi) are calculated from the nominal diagonal and resolution. Text sizes compare each workspace with a 27-inch 1440p screen at 1×.

Pixel density is the physical limit. The squares below show the same 0.11-inch patch of a 27-inch screen at 109, 163 and 218 ppi, about 12, 18 and 24 pixels across. The green outline is one stroke of a letter at the same physical size. Filled squares are the pixels whose centers fall inside it. At 218 ppi, the steps along the edge are half the size they are at 109 ppi.

The same letter stroke at 109, 163 and 218 pixels per inch Three squares show the same 0.11-inch patch of a 27-inch screen at 1440p, 4K and 5K resolution, about 12, 18 and 24 pixels across. A green outline marks one diagonal stroke of a letter at the same physical size on each. Filled squares are the pixels whose centers fall inside the stroke. The stair steps along its edge are 1.5 times finer at 163 ppi and twice as fine at 218 ppi as at 109 ppi. macOS doesn’t draw every screen the same way. At 1×, each point of the layout is one pixel on the panel. At 2×, each point gets a 2-by-2 block of pixels, so a 5120×2880 panel divides exactly into a 2560×1440 workspace and a 3840×2160 panel into 1920×1080. Any other workspace on those panels is a scaled resolution: 2560×1440 on a 4K panel works out to 1.5 panel pixels per point, not a whole number.

Apple’s resolution guide says to click Default to use “the best resolution for your display” and that “using a scaled resolution may affect performance.” It doesn’t describe how scaled text looks. Judge that on your own documents during the return window.

Try what you already own first

Every Apple silicon Mac mini has an HDMI port. If the cable that came with your monitor or TV fits a port on the mini, you need nothing else to try it. Our desk setup guide shows which port to use on each model. A few days with the screen you own tells you what a new one would need to fix.

Our reading of the tradeoffs:

  • Video, dashboards, chat or a reference window: density is not the main job. An existing 1080p or 1440p screen is a reasonable place for that work, and the money may do more elsewhere.
  • Hours of reading, writing or code: this is where pixel density is the purchase. If text edges or text size bother you on the screen you own, the answer table shows which tier changes that.
  • Too little room for windows: that is a workspace problem, not a density problem. A 27-inch 1440p screen at 1× and a 27-inch 5K screen at 2× both give a 2560×1440 workspace. A 4K screen at an exact 2× gives less.

For comparison, a 24-inch 1080p monitor is 92 ppi, a 27-inch 1080p monitor is 82 ppi and a 55-inch 4K TV is 80 ppi.

Connection check by model

  • For a 5K screen, use a rear Thunderbolt port. Apple lists HDMI at up to 4K on the M1, M2, M2 Pro, M4 and M6 minis. The M4 Pro and M5 Pro list up to 6K over Thunderbolt or HDMI. On 2024 and later minis, don’t use the front USB-C ports for a screen.
  • For two 5K screens, every model except the M1 lists a combination with two Thunderbolt displays at 5K or higher. The M1 runs one display over Thunderbolt and its second over HDMI, at up to 4K.
  • For a USB-C monitor, connect a USB-C cable to a rear Thunderbolt port. For a DisplayPort input, use a USB-C to DisplayPort cable or adapter.
  • For more than 60Hz, check your model first. Apple lists HDMI at up to 4K at 60Hz on the M1 and M2, and its Mac mini specifications list 5K and 6K screens at 60Hz.

Our Mac mini desk setup guide has Apple’s full display limits by model, with sources. A Mac mini runs from its own power cord, so a monitor’s USB-C charging wattage matters only if a laptop will share the screen.

Prices below are U.S. manufacturer prices and can change.

27-inch 1440p: Dell S2725DC

Dell’s page listed the Dell 27 Plus QHD USB-C Monitor at $259.99 with limited stock. Dell lists a 2560×1440 panel at 144Hz, a USB-C input with DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode and up to 65 watts of power delivery, one HDMI 2.1 port and one DisplayPort 1.4 port. At 109 ppi, it is a 1× screen on a Mac.

27-inch 4K: Dell S2725QC

Dell’s page listed the Dell 27 Plus 4K USB-C Monitor at $349.99 with limited stock. Dell lists 3840×2160 at 120Hz, a USB-C input with DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode and up to 65 watts of power delivery, and two HDMI 2.1 ports. That is $90 more than the 1440p Dell for 1.5 times as many pixels in each direction. The catch is the mapping: an exact 2× gives a 1920×1080 workspace, and the 1440p layout is a scaled setting.

24-inch 4K: check the listing carefully

LG’s page for its 24-inch 4K 24UD58-B says the monitor has been discontinued, and we did not verify a current mainstream replacement. The tier still has a clear case: at 184 ppi, an exact 2× gives a 1920×1080 workspace on a screen 20.9 inches wide. If a listing gives a 23.8-inch diagonal, 4K works out to 185 ppi.

Find 24-inch 4K monitors on Amazon. Check that the listing says 3840×2160; lower-resolution 24-inch screens appear in the same results.

27-inch 5K: BenQ MA270S and ASUS PA27JCV

BenQ MA270S. BenQ’s specifications list 5120×2880 at 218 ppi and 70Hz, a Thunderbolt 4 input with 96 watts of power delivery and a Thunderbolt 4 output. They also list a USB-C input with DisplayPort Alt Mode and two HDMI 2.1 ports. BenQ’s launch announcement gave an MSRP of $999, with availability starting March 2026. Its U.S. store page displayed no price Sept. 15.

ASUS ProArt PA27JCV. ASUS’s specifications list 5120×2880 at 218 ppi and 60Hz, a USB-C input with DisplayPort Alt Mode and 96 watts of power delivery, one DisplayPort 1.4 port and one HDMI 2.1 port. ASUS’s U.S. store page displayed no standalone price Sept. 15.

Samsung’s ViewFinity S9 page listed the 27-inch 5K LS27C900PANXZA at $1,599.99 and showed it as not available for delivery or in-store pickup.

BenQ’s announced MSRP is $600 below the Studio Display’s $1,599 starting price. Both are 27-inch 5K screens at 218 ppi, so the differences are ports, camera, stands and refresh rate (70Hz vs. 60Hz), not density.

Apple Studio Display

Apple’s specifications list a 27-inch 5K Retina display at 5120×2880 and 218 ppi, with 600 nits of brightness and a 60Hz refresh rate. Apple lists two Thunderbolt 5 ports, one of them upstream with 96W host charging, plus two USB-C ports at up to 10Gb/s. Apple’s store listed it Sept. 15 at $1,599 with the tilt-adjustable stand or a VESA mount adapter and $1,999 with the tilt- and height-adjustable stand. Nano-texture glass adds $300. The store page also lists a 12MP camera.

The Studio Display XDR keeps 218 ppi and adds a 120Hz refresh rate with Adaptive Sync and 140W host charging, according to Apple’s XDR specifications. Apple’s store listed it at $2,899 with a VESA mount adapter and $3,299 with the tilt- and height-adjustable stand; nano-texture glass adds $300. Apple lists the Mac mini (2020 and later) as compatible and says M1 and M2 Macs run it at 60Hz only. Confirm 120Hz support for your model with Apple before paying for it.

Size and desk space

These are lit-screen figures for 16:9 screens; bezels and stands add to each one.

Diagonal Width Height Screen area 4K ppi
24-inch 20.9 in. 11.8 in. 246 sq. in. 184
27-inch 23.5 in. 13.2 in. 312 sq. in. 163
32-inch 27.9 in. 15.7 in. 438 sq. in. 138

A 27-inch screen is 2.6 inches wider than a 24-inch screen and has 27% more area. A 32-inch screen is 4.4 inches wider and 2.5 inches taller than a 27-inch screen, with 40% more area. On a 32-inch 4K screen, an exact 2× gives a 1920×1080 workspace with text 58% larger than on a 27-inch 1440p screen. Its 2560×1440 workspace is a scaled setting, with text 19% larger.

What to buy by budget

Recommendation: Spend nothing until the screen you own shows a problem you can name. At Dell’s Sept. 15 prices, $259.99 buys a 27-inch 1440p screen with the 2560×1440 workspace at 1×, a sensible choice for windows, video and reference work. For $90 more, the 27-inch 4K Dell puts more pixels into each letter if you accept either larger text at 2× or a scaled setting. BenQ’s announced $999 MSRP is the lowest 27-inch 5K price we could document, and 5K is the route to a 2560×1440 workspace at an exact 2×. Pay Apple’s $1,599 starting price only for what the Studio Display adds beyond that density: its camera, Thunderbolt 5 ports and Apple’s stand options. Consider the XDR only if you need 120Hz and have confirmed your mini supports it.

Check it before the return window closes

  1. Choose the resolution you will actually use in System Settings > Displays, then read and write in your normal apps for a full session. If you chose a scaled setting, watch scrolling and video playback; Apple says scaled resolutions may affect performance.
  2. Use the port and cable you will keep. Confirm the monitor shows its full native resolution and, if you paid for one, its higher refresh rate. On 2024 and later minis, use a rear port.
  3. Sleep, wake and restart the mini. The screen should return at the same resolution and arrangement each time.
  4. Note the seller’s return deadline and any restocking terms the day the monitor arrives, and keep the box until the first three checks pass.
