Where to buy a used Mac mini, priced channel by channel
The same base M4 Mac mini asks $721 on Swappa, $850 on eBay and $999 on Amazon Renewed. A channel-by-channel price table for used minis — including the week the folk wisdom about refurbisher premiums ran backward.
In our Aug. 21-26 snapshot, Swappa had the lowest median asking price for a base M4 Mac mini (16GB, 256GB) at $721. PayMore was $767, eBay $850, Walmart marketplace sellers $900 and Amazon Renewed $999. The same configuration spanned $278, and the lowest-priced channels included seller vetting or in-house grading and warranties.
That last part is worth pausing on, because it inverts the usual advice — including ours.

One more measured row from the step-up tier: Best Buy’s open-box M4 Pro minis asked a median $1,543 (n=4) against eBay’s $1,699 (n=18).
Why were Swappa and PayMore cheaper than eBay?
The standing rule of thumb — ours included — is that graded sellers with warranties charge 10-15% over eBay, and the premium is the price of the grading. In this window the base M4 numbers say otherwise: Swappa listings, which carry a 12-month warranty, sat 15% under eBay’s median, and PayMore sat 10% under. Amazon Renewed, with its 90-day guarantee, was the expensive channel at 18% over eBay and 25% over Apple’s own $799 new list price.
We cannot establish why from one week of listings. Two cautions matter before anyone treats the result as a rule. The non-eBay samples are small — six or seven listings against eBay’s 75 — and eBay’s median is pulled up by the current squeeze: with new minis backordered at Apple and flickering at chains, eBay sellers price for buyers who need a machine now. Slower repricing at the graded channels is one possible explanation, not a finding. The difference may not survive the month; the table carries its dates.
What buyer protection does each used-Mac channel provide?
eBay is the deep market — 75 base-M4 listings to everyone else’s handful — with the Money Back Guarantee as the safety net and no grading: you are trusting photos and feedback. Swappa is a marketplace of vetted listings with a 12-month warranty and payments through PayPal. PayMore is a chain of electronics resale stores that grades in-house. Amazon Renewed is refurbished stock sold under Amazon’s 90-day Renewed guarantee, priced this week like the convenience it is. Walmart’s marketplace listings are third-party sellers under Walmart’s storefront — check the seller name before assuming it’s Walmart. Best Buy’s open-box units are store returns with a warranty and the option to inspect in person.
The dedicated Mac refurbishers — Techable (90-day warranty, extendable), Mac of All Trades (30-day window), iPowerResale, UsedMac — carried almost no base-configuration minis in our window; their inventory currently skews toward Studios and older machines. And Apple’s certified refurbished store, historically the gold standard for a used mini, currently lists no desktop Macs at all.
Is a used Mac mini always cheaper than new?
No. The strangest fact in the table: eBay’s $850 median for a used base M4 is $51 above Apple’s $799 list price for a new one. That is a delivery-time premium — Apple quotes weeks, so “used, ships today” outprices “new, ships in October” — but chains flicker in and out of stock at list, and B&H had new units at $799 this week. Sixty seconds of checking new prices is the highest- paid minute in used-Mac shopping right now.
How can you spot bait-priced used Mac mini listings?
Our crawler’s rule: a verified-config ask under 50% of Apple’s list price for a new-condition listing, or under 25% for used, is treated as bait — a scam-shaped listing, a mislabeled part or a capture error, never a deal. This window produced textbook examples: a $170 “M4 mini” and a $118 “M1 mini” on eBay, both excluded from the medians above. Treat a working mini listed at a fifth of the going rate as presumptive bait; the going rates are in the table, and the 10-minute inspection checklist is how you verify the ones that pass.
About the data: Median asking prices for secondhand listings (used, open-box and refurbished conditions combined) observed by our crawler Aug. 21-26, 2026, one price per listing at its latest observation, implausibly low listings excluded from medians but discussed in the bait section. Sample sizes are in the tables and several non-eBay channels are small; treat single-channel medians with few listings as indicative, not precise. Asking prices are not completed sales. One aggregator source was excluded for unreliable config matching. Warranty terms are as published by each store on Aug. 25 and vary; read the policy you buy under.
