Where to buy a used or refurbished Mac mini, priced channel by channel

The same base M4 Mac mini asked $721 on Swappa, $850 on eBay and $999 on Amazon Renewed. Choose the channel by the protection you need, then check the ask against a new M6.

Median asking prices our crawler observed Aug. 21-26, 2026, for a base M4 Mac mini, 16GB/256GB; buyer-protection terms checked Sept. 15.

What do you need protected?

A channel median says where that channel sat that week, not what a listing costs today. Asking prices are not completed sales.

Before paying any ask, compare it with an obtainable new M6. Apple's $899 Aug. 25 list price and the $749 Sept. 2 used median are historical context, not current offers. Evidence

  2. The lowest ask

    Buy Swappa

    $721median ask, base M4, n=6, Aug. 21-26, Swappa, Aug. 26, 2026

Swappa had the lowest median ask we measured, but only listings that show its 12-month warranty carry one, and the warranty comes from the seller, not Swappa. Evidence

Small sample. Covered refunds after 30 days pay Swappa's average sale price, not what you paid.

  3. To inspect it before paying

Buy PayMore or Best Buy open-box

    $767median ask, base M4, n=6, Aug. 21-26, PayMore, Aug. 26, 2026

PayMore stores let you inspect the machine before paying, with a 30-day limited warranty and return period. Best Buy's open-box units carry its 15-day standard return window. Evidence

Small sample; a PayMore return must be in the condition sold. No base M4 median was measured at Best Buy.

  4. An easy return, even at a premium

    Buy Amazon Renewed

    $999median ask, base M4, n=16, Aug. 21-26, Amazon Renewed, Aug. 26, 2026

The Renewed Guarantee is a refund or replacement within 90 days of receipt, excluding accidental damage. Its median was the highest channel median we measured, $100 above the $899 new M6. Evidence

  5. The most listings to choose from

    Buy eBay

    $850median ask, base M4, n=75, Aug. 21-26, eBay, Aug. 26, 2026

eBay's Money Back Guarantee covers an item that doesn't arrive or doesn't match its listing, within 30 days of delivery. There is no grading: you are trusting photos and feedback. Evidence

Purchases paid outside eBay checkout aren't covered.

  6. Apple's own warranty

Apple includes a one-year limited warranty with certified refurbished products. Stock changes between visits: nine mini configurations were listed Sept. 2, and none on Sept. 16. Evidence

    The $849 unit on Sept. 2 was a 16GB/512GB M4.

  7. Holding one listing: is the ask fair?

    No pick

A channel median is not a listing's price. Our Sept. 2 panel of 134 qualified base M4 asks places a specific ask on a ladder. Evidence

Place the ask on the price ladder

The short answer: Choose the channel by what you need protected. Swappa had the lowest median ask, but only listings that show its 12-month warranty carry one; PayMore stores and Best Buy open-box let you inspect first; Amazon Renewed charged the most for its 90-day return; eBay has the most listings and covers items that don’t match their listing. Apple certified refurbished adds a one-year warranty, but its shelf turns over: nine mini configurations from $849 on Sept. 2, no Mac mini at all on Sept. 16. Before paying any ask, compare it with an obtainable new M6. Apple’s $899 Aug. 25 list price is historical context, not a current delivered price.

Which channels actually cut their asks after Apple's announcement

Which channels cut their asks after Apple's Aug. 25 announcement: a 134-offer matched panel, with its limits

In a Hard Bargains matched panel of 134 used Mac mini and Mac Studio asks observed on both sides of Apple’s Aug. 25 announcement, the eBay basket of 102 matched offers fell 11.1% through Sept. 15 while Walmart marketplace’s eight barely moved, a 0.5% basket change with a median of exactly $0.00.

That panel reprices the same listings rather than a changing pool of them: for every listing seen both before and after the announcement, it compares the last ask through Aug. 25 with the latest ask through Sept. 15. It is the only reading on this page that shows whether the post-announcement discount reached a given storefront, as opposed to what that storefront charged during one week of August.

Channel Matched offers Asks that fell Median change Matched basket
eBay 102 79 −$152.00 (−7.9%) −11.1%
Amazon 11 7 −$50.00 (−5.3%) −6.9%
Walmart marketplace 8 2 $0.00 (0.0%) −0.5%
PayMore 4 4 −$81.00 (−8.1%) −8.4%
Swappa 4 4 −$71.00 (−9.5%) −8.6%

Four more sources sit in the same panel with too few matched offers to rank: iPowerResale with two, and Best Buy, MacSales/OWC and Newegg with one each. Their counts are here and their percentages are not, because a 30% move across one or two listings is arithmetic rather than a channel. The nine sources sum to the full 134 offers.

Walmart is the row worth pausing on. Five of its eight matched listings had not changed price at all by Sept. 15, two had fallen and one had risen, leaving a median change of exactly $0.00. On eBay, 79 of 102 had moved down and the median listing gave up $152. Eight offers is a thin panel, so read that as no movement observed at Walmart in this window rather than as Walmart policy — but a buyer assuming every seller quietly repriced after Aug. 25 is wrong about at least one channel.

Four limits narrow what the table can be used for:

  • It is not a clean channel comparison. The panel covers all four models Apple replaced — M4 and M4 Pro Mac minis and M4 Max and M3 Ultra Mac Studios — and the Studios fell furthest, with baskets down 12.5% and 14.6%. Four to 11 matched offers cannot be split by channel and model at the same time, so a channel holding more Studios will look like the deeper discounter on model mix alone.
  • For a mini, use the mini rows. Across the whole panel, 69 matched M4 mini offers fell 5.7% with a $50 median cut, and 19 M4 Pro mini offers fell 11.3% with a $200 median cut. Those are model figures, not per-channel figures.
  • These are asking prices, not completed sales. Nobody is obliged to accept them, and no sale price is recorded here.
  • The panel only sees listings that were still for sale. Anything that sold and disappeared is excluded by construction, so the set is weighted toward listings that did not sell. And it establishes timing, not cause: nothing here proves Apple’s announcement moved any of these prices.

What it changes for the choice below: the discount did not arrive evenly, so the channel with the lowest August median is not automatically the one with the most room left today. Swappa and PayMore, the two cheapest channels in the table further down, had each already conceded roughly 8% to 9% on their four matched listings. Amazon, the channel that charged the most in August, gave up 6.9% across 11. Movement and level are different questions, and only the level decides what you pay.

The whole 134-offer panel, with its model rows and its Intel comparison group, is in asking prices for the Macs Apple replaced are down 11.9%. To place one specific ask in the distribution instead of beside a percentage, use the price ladder for a used base M4. The daily price tracker keeps each reading of this panel as it is regenerated.

How much did used Mac minis cost by channel?

Supports The lowest ask · To inspect it before paying · The most listings to choose from · Holding one listing: is the ask fair?

In our Aug. 21-26 snapshot, Swappa had the lowest median asking price for a base M4 Mac mini (16GB, 256GB) at $721. PayMore was $767, eBay $850, Walmart marketplace sellers $900 and Amazon Renewed $999. The same configuration spanned $278, and the lowest-priced channels included seller vetting, in-house grading and warranty options.

Channel M4 16/256 median n M1 8/256 median n
Swappa $721 6 — —
PayMore $767 6 $420 3
eBay $850 75 $433 42
Walmart marketplace $900 7 — —
Amazon Renewed $999 16 $606 14

One more measured row from the step-up tier: Best Buy’s open-box M4 Pro minis asked a median $1,543 (n=4) against eBay’s $1,699 (n=18).

These are August levels. How far each channel has moved since is the separate matched-panel reading above.

For a later and larger reading, our Sept. 2 panel of 134 qualified base M4 asks had a $749 median; its price ladder shows where a given ask falls.

Why were Swappa and PayMore cheaper than eBay?

Why graded channels were cheaper than eBay that week, and why we can't say for sure

The standing rule of thumb — ours included — is that graded sellers with warranties charge 10-15% over eBay, and the premium is the price of the grading. In this window the base M4 numbers said otherwise: Swappa’s median sat 15% under eBay’s, and PayMore’s sat 10% under. Amazon Renewed, with its 90-day guarantee, was the expensive channel at 18% over eBay and above the $799 Apple list price for a new base M4 at the time.

We cannot establish why from one week of listings. Two cautions matter before anyone treats the result as a rule. The non-eBay samples are small — six to 16 listings against eBay’s 75 — and eBay’s median may have been pulled up by that month’s supply squeeze: with new minis backordered at Apple and in and out of stock at chains, eBay sellers could price for buyers who needed a machine immediately. Slower repricing at the graded channels is one possible explanation, not a finding. The difference may not have survived the month; the table carries its dates.

What buyer protection does each used-Mac channel provide?

Supports The lowest ask · To inspect it before paying · An easy return, even at a premium · The most listings to choose from · Apple's own warranty

eBay is the deep market — 75 base-M4 listings to everyone else’s handful. Its Money Back Guarantee covers an item that doesn’t arrive or doesn’t match its listing. You have 30 days after delivery to open a request, or longer if the seller’s return window is longer, and purchases paid outside eBay checkout aren’t covered. There is no grading: you are trusting photos and feedback.

Swappa is a marketplace of vetted listings. Its 12-month limited warranty is provided by the seller, not Swappa, and applies only to listings that say they include it. Under the warranty terms, a covered refund within 30 days returns the full purchase price; after that, it is Swappa’s average sale price for that model and condition.

PayMore is a chain of electronics resale stores that grades in-house. Its 30-day limited warranty and return period start at purchase in a store or at delivery online, and a returned device must be in the condition it was sold.

Amazon Renewed is refurbished stock sold under the Amazon Renewed Guarantee: a refund or replacement within 90 days of receipt, excluding accidental damage. In our window it was priced like the convenience it is. Find Amazon Renewed Mac minis. This opens search results, not a specific product; the $999 figure is an Aug. 21-26 median ask, not a current Amazon price.

Walmart’s marketplace listings are third-party sellers under Walmart’s storefront — check the seller name before assuming it’s Walmart. Best Buy’s open-box units are store returns you may be able to inspect in person. Best Buy’s standard 15-day return window applies to open-box products; warranty coverage varies by product, so read the listing.

The dedicated Mac refurbishers — Techable (90-day warranty, extendable), Mac of All Trades (30-day window), iPowerResale, UsedMac — carried almost no base-configuration minis in our window; their inventory skewed toward Studios and older machines. Apple’s certified refurbished store, historically the gold standard for a used mini, had no headless Macs in the original window but listed minis and one Studio by Sept. 2. Apple includes a one-year limited warranty with certified refurbished products.

Is a used Mac mini always cheaper than new?

Supports Buy nothing used

No. In the Aug. 21-26 snapshot, eBay’s $850 median for a used base M4 sat above the $799 Apple then charged for a new one. That was a delivery-time premium: Apple quoted Oct. 1-8 delivery on Aug. 25, so a used mini that shipped immediately could outprice a new one that arrived weeks later.

The comparison point has since moved. The base M4’s replacement, the M6, lists at $899 for 16GB/256GB and ships Sept. 22. Our Sept. 2 median for a used base M4, $749, is $150 below that; the Aug. 21-26 Amazon Renewed median of $999 was $100 above it. Check the new price and delivery date before paying any used ask.

If you are buying for local AI, pick memory before channel, because no channel can add memory later. A 16GB M4 mini leaves a model about 10.7GB, enough for an 8B model comfortably and a 14B above its minimum (24.11 t/s measured at 7B), but not a 27B or 70B model; check what your current computer runs and which M5 Pro mini memory tier holds larger models before choosing a listing.

Compare the whole setup, not just the ask: an M1 or M2 mini takes USB-A keyboards and receivers directly, while an M4 needs a USB-C adapter or hub for them. Our Mac mini desk setup guide shows what each model needs. If you haven’t chosen a model, or want used asks beside the new Mac at the same price, our budget map lays out each tier.

How can you spot bait-priced used Mac mini listings?

Bait-priced listings: the rule our crawler uses and what to do with one

Our crawler’s rule: a verified-config ask under 50% of Apple’s list price for a new-condition listing, or under 25% for used, is treated as bait — a scam-shaped listing, a mislabeled part or a capture error, never a deal. This window produced textbook examples: a $170 “M4 mini” and a $118 “M1 mini” on eBay, both excluded from the medians above. Treat a working mini listed at a fifth of the going rate as presumptive bait; the going rates are in the table, and the 10-minute inspection checklist is how you verify the ones that pass. Once a listing passes those checks and only the price is left, what to offer sets out what our matched panels show an ask does after Apple replaces a model, and what they show when Apple has not.

Sources and dates
  • Median asking prices for secondhand listings (used, open-box and refurbished conditions combined) observed by our crawler Aug. 21-26, 2026, one price per listing at its latest observation, implausibly low listings excluded from medians but discussed in the bait section.
  • The channel table remains that original snapshot; it was not silently rerun on Sept. 2, Sept. 15 or Sept. 16.
  • The Apple refurb figures are direct checks of Apple's U.S. store: nine Mac mini configurations from $849 on Sept. 2, and no Mac mini on its refurbished Mac page on Sept. 16, 2026.
  • The $749 base M4 median comes from a separate Sept. 2 panel of 134 qualified asks, and the $899 M6 figure is Apple's U.S. list price for 16GB/256GB as recorded on our budget map.
  • Sample sizes are in the tables and several non-eBay channels are small; treat single-channel medians with few listings as indicative, not precise.
  • Asking prices are not completed sales.
  • One aggregator source was excluded for unreliable config matching.
  • Buyer-protection terms for Swappa, PayMore, eBay, Best Buy and Apple were checked Sept. 15, 2026, at the linked pages.
  • Amazon's Renewed Guarantee page did not load that day; its terms are from Amazon's published help-page summary.
  • Terms for the dedicated Mac refurbishers were not rechecked.
  • The channel diagram adds no new price data.
  • The channel-movement section added Sept. 16 is a different method on a different panel: for each normalized listing URL and condition observed on both sides of Apple's Aug. 25 announcement, our tracker compares the last eligible in-stock ask through Aug. 25 with the latest one through Sept. 15, 2026.
  • Those figures come from a tracker file generated Sept. 15, 2026, at 23:45 UTC, whose latest catalog observation was 22:18 UTC the same day.
  • Its 134 matched offers span all four models Apple replaced, including Mac Studios, so the model mix differs by channel and the per-channel rows are not a like-for-like channel comparison.
  • The panel re-observes listings that were still for sale, so any listing that sold and disappeared is excluded by construction.
  • Four sources with two or fewer matched offers are reported as counts only and are not ranked.
  • Matched-panel changes are asking-price changes, not completed sales, and do not establish that Apple's announcement caused them.
  • Warranty terms change; read the policy you buy under.
  • The local AI note in the new-versus-used section carries its figures from our guide to whether your computer can run a local model, checked Sept. 16, 2026; usable memory applies the macOS GPU reserve developers report, not an Apple specification, model minimums are canirun.ai estimates at roughly 4-bit and the 24.11 t/s figure is one contributor's llama.cpp run of a 7B model on an M4, not a Hard Bargains test.
