The best used Mac desktop for every budget in 2026

Update, Sept. 2: The broad recommendations still hold, but the market has moved. Our current, configuration-mixed medians are $449 for the M1 mini (n=115), $605 for M2 (n=63), $899 for M4 (n=255) and $1,762 for M4 Pro (n=64). The M1 and outgoing M4 tiers are cheaper than in the original Aug. 18-25 snapshot. The exact-config figures below remain labeled to that original window; use the daily tracker for the live market rather than treating them as today’s quotes.

The short answer: A used M1 mini, at a $449 median ask on Sept. 2, is still the value pick for a general desktop, and an old Intel mini you already own may cover a home-server job for nothing. Around $900-$1,100, compare a used M4 or M2 Pro with the new M6 at $899 for 16GB/256GB or $1,099 for 16GB/512GB. Above that, check Apple’s price for the new machine before paying a used ask.

The best overall used Mac desktop in our Aug. 18-25 snapshot is the M1 Mac mini at a $509 median ask. Below that, Intel minis remain useful as servers; above it, the right choice depends on whether you need newer single-core speed, Studio memory bandwidth or local AI capacity.

The used Mac market prices processor performance at a strikingly consistent rate — 16.4 to 19.4 Geekbench 7 points per dollar on every good-value Apple Silicon machine in our Sept. 15 reading. What changes by budget isn’t the deal quality; it’s what kind of machine the money buys and which caveat comes attached. Here is the board, tier by tier.

Used Mac desktops by budget, with the new Mac at each price

Each row pairs a used pick and the job it fits with the new Mac Apple sells at about the same price, where one exists. If you are funding the purchase by moving the Mac you already own, what that sale nets after fees — not its asking price — decides which tier you are shopping in.

Mixed-configuration medians can include upgraded machines, so the Sept. 2 M4 Pro median sitting $63 above the M5 Pro’s list price ($1,761.99 against $1,699) shows only that a new M5 Pro is worth checking first, not that every used M4 Pro costs more.

Around $100: 2012 Intel Mac mini for a home server

The 2012 Core i5 mini at a $97 median runs a file server, Time Machine target, Plex direct-play box or iMessage bridge without noticing the load. The caveat is security: its last official macOS went unpatched about four years ago, so it belongs behind your router, not exposed to the internet — or under Linux. Don’t pay up for the 2014 models expecting more; the 2014 line is dual-core only and its best chip benchmarks below the 2012 quad.

Around $200: 2018 i3 Mac mini for a 4K Plex server

The 2018 Core i3 mini, about $200, carries the same hardware HEVC transcode engine as its $625 six-core sibling — the part that matters for a 4K media library — and it still receives Apple security patches, likely through fall 2027. Around $500: M1 Mac mini, the best overall value

The M1 Mac mini, $509 median in the Aug. 18-25 snapshot, is the points-per-dollar champion of the entire used market — 19.4 multi-core points per dollar against its $444.98 median on Sept. 15, current macOS support, silent, sips power. For a general-purpose desktop, email-to-Xcode, this is the default answer. Caveat: most listings are 8GB/256GB; that config is fine for one person’s daily driving and cramped for heavy multitasking or any local AI. See live M1 mini listings. Around $600: M2 Mac mini for modestly faster single-core speed

The M2 mini at $610 buys about 9% more single-core speed than the M1 for about 20% more money. The value move at this tier is usually $100 down to the M1 or $380 up to the M4 unless that modest speed increase matters. See live M2 mini listings.

Around $1,000: M4 Mac mini for a newer desktop

The M4 mini, $990 median, is the newest desktop Apple no longer sells cheaply — its inflation-adjusted launch price was the lowest in mini history before the line was repriced. Single-core is 50% above the M1; this is the tier where the machine stops feeling like a bargain and starts feeling new. That $990 figure is the original Aug. 18-25 median; for the base 16GB/256GB model, our Sept. 2 panel of 134 qualified asks had a $749 median, and the price ladder shows where a given ask falls. In the Aug. 18-25 snapshot, $990 used sat above the $799 Apple then charged at list — a premium for having one sooner, since Apple quoted Oct. 1-8 delivery on Aug. 25 and chains flickered in and out of stock. Its replacement, the M6, now starts at $899 for 16GB/256GB. Unlike the M1 and M2 tiers, the M4 has no USB-A ports, so a wired USB-A keyboard or receiver needs an adapter; our port table by model shows the rest.

Around $2,000: M4 Pro mini or M1 Max Studio

Two honest options: the M4 Pro mini (about $1,956 used in the Aug. 18-25 snapshot, but check new prices first — it was in stock new at $1,570-$1,599 at chains Aug. 24-25, below used asks) and the M1 Max Studio at $1,863. The Studio buys 64GB-capable memory, more ports and 400GB/s bandwidth; the M4 Pro mini buys a much newer CPU. For compute per dollar the mini wins; for memory headroom and I/O the Studio does. If that memory is for local models, the new machine near this budget that holds a 70B dense model is the M5 Pro mini with 64GB, $2,699 at Apple on Aug. 25. $4,000-$5,500: for local AI, buy new unless you need 128GB at 800GB/s

At 64GB, buy new, and not an Ultra. A used M1 Ultra Studio with 64GB had a $4,049 median ask across 16 listings in our Aug. 18-25 snapshot. A new 40-core M5 Max Studio with 64GB is about $3,500 by Daring Fireball’s rounded figure: about $549 less, with a warranty. You trade the used Ultra’s 800GB/s of memory bandwidth for 614GB/s.

At 128GB, used still buys something at a near-equal price. The M1 Ultra’s $5,249 median ask sits roughly $150 above a new M5 Max with 128GB at about $5,100 (Daring Fireball, rounded). The extra money buys 800GB/s against 614GB/s, the axis on which the used Ultra beats every non-Mac unified-memory box, and gives up the warranty. Our configuration-matched verdicts, size by size, carry both rows and the larger Studios.

Two caveats still apply. The M1 Ultra lacks Thunderbolt 5, so it’s excluded from Apple’s new fast clustering path. And the brand-new M5 Ultra at $5,499 (96GB, 1.2TB/s, warranty, delivery by Oct. 12 as Apple quoted on Aug. 25) costs $250 more than the 128GB used ask: 32GB less memory for more bandwidth.

Today’s used asks are coarser. On Sept. 15 our price tracker had a $4,859.10 median across 39 M1 Ultra offers from three sources, but that pool mixes memory and storage configurations, from $2,534.28 to $10,074.32, so it is not the price of either machine above. See live M1 Ultra Studio listings.

Two cheaper routes may hold the model you want. The M5 Pro Mac mini with 64GB, $2,699 (Apple, Aug. 25), holds a 70B dense model with about 9GB of GPU memory beyond its minimum, at an estimated 5-7 tokens a second; no M5 Pro had a published measured benchmark by Sept. 16. The GMKtec EVO-X2 with 128GB and 1TB, $3,499.99 (GMKtec store, Sept. 16), holds 120B mixture-of-experts models: on a Framework Desktop with the same chip, gpt-oss-120b ran at 33.7 tokens a second but a dense 70B at only 4.5-5.0, measured in a third party’s llama.cpp runs. For dense 70B speed, bandwidth is what the Ultra’s price buys: 800GB/s against 307GB/s for the M5 Pro and 256GB/s for the EVO-X2.

Above $5,500: compare the incoming M5 Studios first

Past $5,500 you are shopping against Apple’s own launch window. As of Aug. 25, Apple quoted the M5 Max and M5 Ultra Studios for delivery between Sept. 28 and Oct. 12, at list prices below most of the secondhand asks we observed for the machines they replace. Until those ship, the top of the used market is priced for people who cannot wait for that delivery. If that isn’t you, the calendar is your discount.
