Every Mac mini price since 2005, in today's dollars
The M6 Mac mini's $899 is the highest sticker price in the product's 21-year history. Adjust every generation to today's dollars and the picture changes — three older minis cost more, and the real record belongs to something else entirely.
The M6 Mac mini’s $899 is the most Apple has ever charged for its smallest computer. It is not, in real terms, the most a Mac mini has ever cost. Run every generation’s launch price through the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ inflation calculator and three older minis pass it: the 2010 unibody redesign ($699 then, $1,070 in today’s dollars), the 2018 model ($799 then, $1,063 now) and the 2006 Intel transition ($599 then, $992 now).
The real record in this table is at the other end, and it is 21 months old. The M4 mini’s $599 launch in November 2024 was the cheapest Mac mini ever sold, in constant dollars, in the product’s history — $638 in today’s money, under the famous $499 of 2005 ($853) and 2014 ($704).

Why the M6 increase is the real record
Read the last column top to bottom and the product’s whole story is there. From the 2010 peak, the real price of entering the Mac ecosystem fell for 14 years — unevenly, with the 2018 model as the one big exception — and bottomed in November 2024. Adjusted for inflation, the M4 mini cost 25% less than the G4 did in 2005 and 40% less than the 2010 peak.
Then the slope flipped. Between November 2024 and today, the line’s entry price went from $599 to $799 — June’s repricing, applied to the same M4 with no new machine attached, the only mid-cycle increase in the table — and then to $899 with the M6. That is a 41% real increase in 21 months. The 2014-to-2018 jump was larger in total (+51% real), but it took four years and came with a redesign. Nothing in the mini’s history matches the current speed.
Is $899 expensive for a Mac mini?
Nominal comparisons flatter the present in one direction; specs pull the other way. The $992-in-real-terms 2006 mini shipped with 512MB of memory and a 60GB hard drive. The M6 ships with 16GB and 256GB of flash, plus a chip Apple says is 40% faster than the M4 — though by Apple’s own claims it is the first mini generation to launch with worse price-per-benchmark-point than its predecessor.
So the honest answer to “is $899 a lot for a Mac mini” is: by the sticker, yes, the most ever; in real dollars, mid-pack — three past minis cost more. What has no precedent is the direction. Buyers spent two decades watching the entry-level Mac get cheaper in real terms, and the 21 months since November 2024 put the real price back at 2011 levels. Whether the next generation resumes the old trend or confirms the new one is open.
