M5 Pro Mac mini for local AI: 24GB, 48GB or 64GB, and what the same money buys instead
Memory is the one choice that cannot change after checkout. Each tier below carries what it holds, a speed labeled measured or estimated and the option that beats it for the same money.
Based on Apple’s specifications, arithmetic already published on Hard Bargains and third-party benchmarks, not our own testing.

The short answer
As of Sept. 16, 2026, no M5 Pro Mac mini has been benchmarked; Apple ships it Sept. 22. The same chip has been, in MacBook Pros: the M5 Pro with a 20-core GPU generated 66.33 tokens a second on a 7B model at 4-bit in llama.cpp’s reference benchmark, and every other M5 Pro speed below is an estimate scaled from its measured runs. Choose it by memory: 24GB for 7B-14B models, 48GB for 27B-class models with room for long conversations and 64GB only for a 70B dense model, which it holds at an estimated 6-7 tokens a second. The 48GB tier is not a 70B machine, and memory cannot be added after purchase.
If you've decided: where to buy it
The Amazon links open the configurations named below. We claim no Amazon price, seller or stock, and no price named here is an Amazon offer.
- Keep what you own, $0. Check what your computer runs before buying anything.
- 24GB, for 7B-14B. Apple’s configurator, $1,699 list (Aug. 25); or the 15-core M5 Pro with 24GB and 512GB on Amazon link to that exact model.
- 48GB for 27B, or 64GB for a 70B dense model. Apple’s configurator. No exact Amazon listing matched either tier on Sept. 16.
- gpt-oss-120b, or more than 48GB for a model. GMKtec’s store, EVO-X2 128GB/1TB at $3,499.99 (Sept. 16); or the EVO-X2 with 128GB and 2TB on Amazon link to that exact model: the 2TB model, not the 1TB priced here.
- A faster 27B, with less memory. Apple’s Mac Studio store; or the M5 Max Mac Studio with 36GB, the 32-core GPU and 512GB on Amazon link to that exact model.
- A used RTX 3090, if you own a PC that fits it. eBay; offer near the $1,032 sold price (GetPCParts, Sept. 12).
Amazon sold some standard M6 and M5 Pro minis below Apple’s list during preorders, MacRumors and AppleInsider reported; before Oct. 6-7, check the price to beat.
Every option, side by side
| Choice | Price, source and date | Memory a model can use | Largest class with room, about 4-bit | Speed | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keep what you own | $0 | A 16GB Mac: about 10.7GB | 8B; 14B above its minimum | 7B: 24.11 t/s on an M4, measured | Check what your computer runs |
| M5 Pro mini, 24GB | $1,699, Apple, Aug. 25 | About 16GB | 14B; not 27B | 7B Q4_0: ~65 t/s, estimate; 66.33 measured on the same chip’s 20-core GPU | Configure at Apple |
| M5 Pro mini, 48GB | $2,299: the base plus Apple’s $600 upgrade, Aug. 25 | About 36GB | 27B dense with long-context room; not 70B | 27B: ~16-19 t/s, estimate | Configure at Apple |
| M5 Pro mini, 64GB | $2,699: the base plus Apple’s $1,000 upgrade; $3,199 with the 18-core chip and 1TB; Apple, Aug. 25 | About 48GB | 70B dense, about 9GB spare | 70B: ~6-7 t/s, estimate | Configure at Apple |
| Used M4 Pro mini | $1,745.36 median ask across 118 offers, Sept. 15; mixed configurations | Depends on the listing | Depends on the listing | 7B: 49.64 t/s, 16-core GPU, measured | M4 vs. M4 Pro |
| Used RTX 3090, 24GB | $1,032 eBay sold price (GetPCParts, Sept. 12); card only | 24GB, less display use | 27B-30B | 7B: 158.16 t/s, measured | Which GPU runs your model |
| M5 Max Mac Studio, 36GB | $2,499, Apple, Aug. 25 | About 27GB | 27B dense with room; not 70B | 27B: ~22-24 t/s, estimate | Mac speeds by model |
| 128GB Ryzen AI Max+ 395 box | GMKtec EVO-X2 128GB/1TB $3,499.99, GMKtec store, Sept. 16 (2TB $3,649.99); Framework Desktop $3,449, out of stock | Up to 96GB on Windows, per HP and Framework | 120B mixture-of-experts | 70B: 4.5-5.0 t/s; gpt-oss-120b: 33.7 t/s; measured on a Framework Desktop, same chip | Compare the boxes |
Mac memory figures apply the default GPU reserve developers report for macOS, explained below. Measured speeds are third-party llama.cpp runs; the 128GB box’s 4.5-5.0 t/s spans two backends. M5 estimates scale the same chips’ measured MacBook Pro runs, as our Mac speeds page shows. When a measured benchmark of the desktop disagrees, the benchmark wins.
What each M5 Pro tier holds
Two numbers decide whether a model fits. The first is the model’s minimum memory at about 4-bit, from canirun.ai. The second is how much of the Mac’s memory the GPU can use. Developers report in llama.cpp’s Metal memory discussion that macOS withholds about one third of unified memory from the GPU below 32GB and about one quarter above it. That is a community-reported default, not an Apple specification. It can be raised on a running Mac, as the free fixes explain, but raising it takes memory from macOS and everything else that is open.
Apple’s specifications, re-read Sept. 16, list the M5 Pro mini with 24GB, configurable to 48GB or 64GB, and a 15-core CPU configurable to 18 cores.
| Tier | Apple price, Aug. 25 | GPU can use by default | Holds with room | Left out, and why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24GB | $1,699 | about 16GB | 7B-14B: Qwen3 14B needs 7.8GB | 27B: Qwen 3.5 27B’s 15.5GB minimum leaves less than 9GB of 24GB for everything else and nearly fills the default GPU share |
| 48GB | $2,299 | about 36GB | 27B dense, with room for long context | 70B: Llama 3.3 70B’s 39.1GB minimum leaves less than 9GB of 48GB and is larger than the default GPU share |
| 64GB | $2,699 | about 48GB | 70B dense, with about 9GB of the GPU share beyond its minimum | 120B: gpt-oss-120b’s 65.4GB minimum is larger than the machine |
48GB is not a 70B tier. This is the expensive mistake. A 70B model’s 39.1GB minimum looks as if it fits inside 48GB. It leaves less than 9GB for macOS, apps and the conversation, below the margin our Mac speeds page requires before it will estimate a speed, and it is larger than the roughly 36GB the GPU gets by default. If a 70B model is the reason to buy, the $400 step from 48GB to 64GB is the one that matters.
64GB holds 70B at its minimum, not at its recommended figure. canirun.ai’s recommended figure for Llama 3.3 70B is 65.2GB, more than the machine has. Long prompts need memory beyond the minimum, and at 64GB little is left for them.
24GB is a small-model tier. It runs 7B-14B models with room. A 27B model’s 15.5GB minimum leaves 8.5GB of 24GB, and our speeds page leaves that combination out.
How fast, and which launch number to ignore
Apple’s headline number is about waiting, not reading. Apple’s Aug. 25 announcement says the M5 Pro mini is “up to 4x faster than M4 Pro” at LLM prompt processing in LM Studio. Prompt processing is the pause before a reply starts, and it depends on compute. Generation, the speed at which the reply arrives, depends mostly on memory bandwidth. Apple lists 307GB/s for the M5 Pro, 12% more than the M4 Pro’s 273GB/s by our arithmetic.
The same chip, measured in MacBook Pros, backs the prompt claim and shows how much less generation gained. In llama.cpp’s Apple Silicon table, the 20-core-GPU M5 Pro processed a 7B prompt at 3.7 times the 20-core M4 Pro’s speed and generated 31% faster at 4-bit, but only 25% faster on the larger F16 file. The bigger the model, the more generation leans on bandwidth.
- 7B at 4-bit (Q4_0), any tier: about 65 t/s with the standard 16-core GPU, an estimate; the 18-core chip’s 20-core GPU measured 66.33.
- About 27B dense, 48GB or 64GB: about 16-19 t/s, an estimate scaled by model size from the measured 4-bit and F16 runs.
- 70B dense, 64GB only: about 6-7 t/s, an estimate by the same scaling.
These are short-context figures, and long prompts cut every machine’s speed: in one measured DeepSeek R1 run on an M3 Ultra Mac Studio, an 11,000-token prompt brought generation from a 16-18 t/s benchmark range to 4.26 under llama.cpp and 11.15 under MLX. How the estimates are derived, and what to check in a launch-week number, is on our Mac speeds page.
What the same money buys instead
Hold a 70B or gpt-oss-120b: cheapest routes, checked Sept. 16
Model minimums are canirun.ai’s figures at about 4-bit, 39.1GB for Llama 3.3 70B and 65.4GB for gpt-oss-120b, and the memory arithmetic is in what each tier holds.
| Machine | Price, store, date | Order today? | Memory a model can use | 70B | gpt-oss-120b | One speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keep what you own | $0 | Nothing to order | A Mac: about two-thirds of unified memory at 32GB or less, about three-quarters above. A PC: the card’s VRAM, less display use | Yes if about 40GB or more is usable, as on a 64GB Mac; otherwise only with offload to system RAM | Yes on a 128GB Mac, about 96GB; on a PC, only with expert layers in system RAM | Depends on the machine; check yours first |
| Two used RTX 3090s, needs a PC that fits them | About $2,064: two at $1,032, the eBay sold price (GetPCParts, through Sept. 12); asks $1,339-$1,461 each (ResalePrices, Sept. 16) | Used market, 290 listings (ResalePrices, Sept. 16) | 48GB across two cards, less display use | Yes, 8.9GB beyond the minimum | Only with expert layers in system RAM | gpt-oss-120b: 10-17 t/s, measured by LLM Garage with 26 of 36 MoE layers in 64GB DDR4; 70B: 14-16 t/s, estimate (Compute Market) |
| GMKtec EVO-X2, 64GB/1TB | $2,199.99, GMKtec store, Sept. 16 | Yes, listed available | Not documented: GMKtec states no GPU maximum, and the 96GB figure applies to 128GB machines | Unknown | No: 65.4GB is more than 64GB | None in our sources |
| M5 Pro Mac mini, 64GB | $2,699, Apple, Aug. 25, carried; Apple’s store showed no prices Sept. 16 | Pre-order; Apple lists it available starting Sept. 22, and says customized selections, which include this 15-core 64GB model, may change delivery estimates | About 48GB | Yes, about 9GB beyond the minimum | No: 65.4GB is more than the machine’s 64GB | 70B: about 6-7 t/s, estimate |
| Framework Desktop, 128GB | $3,449, Framework store, Sept. 16 | No, out of stock | Up to 96GB on Windows, per Framework | Yes | Yes | Same chip as the 128GB EVO-X2 below |
| GMKtec EVO-X2, 128GB/1TB | $3,499.99, GMKtec store, Sept. 16; $3,649.99 with 2TB | Yes, listed available | Up to 96GB on Windows, per HP and Framework documentation for this chip | Yes, 56.9GB beyond the minimum | Yes, 30.6GB beyond the minimum | 70B: 4.5-5.0 t/s; gpt-oss-120b: 33.7 t/s; measured on a Framework Desktop, same chip (lhl) |
| Used Mac Studio, M1 Ultra 128GB | $5,249 median ask, our tracker, Aug. 18-25; carried, and an ask, not a sale | Used; not rechecked | About 96GB | Yes | Yes | No measured M1 Ultra figure in our sources |
The cheapest way to hold a 70B is two used 3090s if you already own a PC that can power and fit them, otherwise the 64GB M5 Pro, a pre-order whose custom configuration Apple says may change delivery estimates; among the GMKtec, Framework, Minisforum and Beelink stores we checked Sept. 15-16, the cheapest complete machine listed available that also holds gpt-oss-120b was the 128GB/1TB EVO-X2, and Bosgame’s store did not load.
Keep what you own
The only choice that costs nothing. A 16GB Apple Silicon Mac leaves about 10.7GB for a model and runs an 8B model at about 4-bit comfortably. Check your machine first. If it already runs a model you can live with, an M5 Pro at that model size buys speed, not a new capability.
A used M4 Pro mini: usually not
The Sept. 15 median ask across 118 used M4 Pro offers was $1,745.36, above the $1,699 Apple price of a new 24GB M5 Pro with 12% more bandwidth and a new-machine warranty. That median mixes configurations, including upgraded memory, and the lowest qualified ask was $1,149 (M4 vs. M4 Pro). Since Apple’s Aug. 25 announcement, matched used M4 Pro offers have fallen 11.33%. The case for a used Pro is a listing that states 48GB or 64GB at a price well under the matching M5 Pro tier. Our tracker has no memory field, so it cannot price that; confirm memory on the listing and work through the used-Mac checklist before paying.
A used RTX 3090: faster and cheaper, if you already own the PC
Where it wins. 24GB at a $1,032 eBay sold price (Sept. 12), 158.16 t/s measured at 7B against the standard M5 Pro mini’s estimated 65, and CUDA, which some local AI tools require.
Where it loses. It is a card, not a computer. Nvidia rates a single-card 3090 system at 750W, and the Founders Edition is 313mm long and takes three slots. It stops at the 27B-30B class. Two cards reach 70B for about $2,064 at the sold price, with at least a 1,000W supply and an estimated 14-16 t/s from Compute Market, not a measurement. Asks ran $1,337-$1,463 on Sept. 15; offer near the sold price. The GPU guide has the checks.
A 36GB M5 Max Mac Studio: faster at 27B, less memory
At $2,499 (Apple, Aug. 25) it costs $200 more than a 48GB M5 Pro mini. Its 460GB/s puts a 27B model at an estimated 22-24 t/s, against the mini’s estimated 16-19. It gives up memory: about 27GB for the GPU by the same community-reported reserve, against about 36GB. Neither holds a 70B model. Apple’s Aug. 25 delivery quote for a New Jersey ZIP code put the base M5 Max Studio at Oct. 5, not Sept. 22.
A 40-core M5 Max with 64GB: double the 70B speed
For a 70B model, Daring Fireball’s rounded price for a 40-core M5 Max Mac Studio with 64GB is about $3,500. That is about $300 over the $3,199 18-core M5 Pro mini with 64GB and 1TB, whose storage may differ from the Studio’s, and about $800 over a 15-core 64GB mini at $2,699. Its 614GB/s is double the mini’s bandwidth. On a 7B model the 40-core M5 Max measured 119.92 t/s against the 20-core M5 Pro’s 66.33, and the same scaling puts a 70B model at an estimated 11-13 t/s against 6-7.
A 128GB Ryzen AI Max+ 395 box: more memory, slower 70B
Where it wins. Up to 96GB of its 128GB can go to the GPU on Windows, per HP and Framework documentation, which holds gpt-oss-120b’s 65.4GB minimum; no M5 Pro mini does. On that mixture-of-experts model a Framework Desktop measured 33.7 t/s in lhl’s published llama.cpp runs. The GMKtec EVO-X2 is $3,499.99 with 1TB (GMKtec store, Sept. 16; $3,649.99 with 2TB), so it carries 1TB or 2TB of storage against the mini’s 512GB base.
Where it loses. It moves memory at 256GB/s against 307GB/s. A dense 70B measured 4.5-5.0 t/s on the same Framework Desktop, depending on the llama.cpp backend, against the 64GB mini’s estimated 6-7. Prompt processing is its weak side, it runs Windows or Linux rather than macOS and it has no CUDA. The 1TB model costs about $800 more than a 64GB mini at $2,699 ($3,499.99 − $2,699 = $800.99), though a 1TB M5 Pro mini costs more than $2,699; Apple’s 18-core 64GB/1TB configuration was $3,199 on Aug. 25. The Framework Desktop is $3,449 when back in stock; it was out of stock Sept. 16. Compare the five boxes.
Where to buy
A new M5 Pro mini. Apple’s M5 Pro configurator; the memory you choose there is final. The prices on this page are Apple’s U.S. prices from Aug. 25; confirm the total there. Amazon lists the standard 15-core M5 Pro with 24GB and 512GB, linked below. We found no exact Amazon listing for the 48GB or 64GB tiers, or for the 18-core chip, on Sept. 16, so those are Apple orders; where to buy a new Mac mini also names B&H custom builds.
Used and maker stores. Our live M4 Pro mini offers, Swappa and Apple certified refurbished for a Mac; eBay and r/hardwareswap for a 3090; GMKtec’s store, which listed the 128GB/1TB model at $3,499.99 and available Sept. 16, for the EVO-X2; Framework’s store, out of stock Sept. 16, for the Framework Desktop.
Amazon listings. The three links below are Amazon links, each to one exact product. We checked each title for chip or processor, memory and storage only, not price, seller, condition or stock. The Apple, GMKtec, Framework and used-market prices above are not Amazon offers, and no Amazon price appears on this page.
- An M5 Pro Mac mini with the 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB and 512GB, title checked Sept. 16, 2026. It is the 24GB tier only; the 48GB and 64GB tiers are not this listing.
- An M5 Max Mac Studio with 36GB, the 32-core GPU and 512GB, title checked Sept. 16, 2026.
- A GMKtec EVO-X2 with 128GB and 2TB, title checked Sept. 16, 2026. This is the 2TB model, not the 1TB model priced above.
When this page changes
- The first independent llama.cpp or MLX benchmark of an M5 Pro mini replaces the MacBook Pro figures and the estimates scaled from them.
- After Sept. 22, the used M4 Pro median is rerun; it has been falling since Apple’s announcement.
- A Framework restock or an Apple memory price change moves the same-money comparison.
- A GMKtec price change on the 128GB EVO-X2 moves the same-money table and the $800 gap.
- An exact Amazon listing for a 48GB or 64GB M5 Pro mini, once its title names the chip, memory and storage, joins the buying list at the top.
Sources and dates
- The M5 Pro Mac mini's $1,699 U.S. base price, Sept. 22 ship date, 307GB/s memory bandwidth and LM Studio prompt-processing claim are from Apple's Aug. 25, 2026, announcement; its chip and memory options were re-read on Apple's specifications page Sept. 16, 2026, when Apple's store listed it as a pre-order available starting Sept. 22, said customized selections may affect delivery estimates and showed no prices.
