Mac mini storage: internal upgrade or external SSD?

The internal space you need and your actual data port decide the route. Compare complete SSD costs before treating a Prime price as a saving.

In this guide: 8 sections
  1. Prime SSD comparison: enclosure, port and usable capacity
  2. Historical route comparison, Sept. 15
  3. Historical Apple list upgrade amounts
  4. Historical external-drive prices, Sept. 15
  5. September comparison: Apple's tier or a separate drive
  6. What your ports limit
  7. What should stay on the internal drive
  8. Where to buy

Prime Big Deal Days ended Oct. 7. Choose Mac mini storage by what must stay inside and the data port you can use. Keep the drive you own if it has enough space. Otherwise compare Apple’s exact internal upgrade with a complete external SSD, including enclosure, drive, cable, required extras and backup. A Prime discount on a bare drive is not the complete cost.

Use the SSD and enclosure cost worksheet to match host, port and capacity, then compare another route for the same required outcome. The Prime PC buying check keeps membership and competing-retailer terms separate.

Prime SSD comparison: enclosure, port and usable capacity

An Amazon Prime SSD offer must beat a complete route with enough capacity, not an empty enclosure. OWC’s direct-store asks are separate from Prime Big Deal Days. The public official 40Gb/s and 80G catalogs were read Oct. 11, with matching exact part links and unchanged displayed asks. Add to Cart appears, but final orderability and buyer-address delivery remain unknown. All asks are before tax and shipping.

Exact OWC route Displayed ask and read date Add or check before comparing
Express 1M2 empty enclosure, US4EXP1M2 $88.99 (Oct. 11) Compatible NVMe M.2 2230/2242/2280 SSD; SATA is not interchangeable. Add its cost unless reusing one. Two-year enclosure warranty; see direct return limits below.
Express 1M2 ready-to-run 1TB, US4EXP1MT01 $469.99 (Oct. 11) SSD included; check host data rate, cable, filesystem and sufficient capacity. Three-year solution warranty.
Express 1M2 ready-to-run 2TB, US4EXP1MT02 $699.99 (Oct. 11) A complete drive, not an enclosure price. Compare the same capacity and delivered costs. Three-year solution warranty.
Express 1M2 80G ready-made 2TB / 4TB $749.99 / $1,349.99 (Oct. 11) A host without the required high-speed data path cannot obtain its headline rating. Select the exact capacity and order terms.

OWC’s direct return policy requires refund requests within 30 days of invoice/ship date, an RMA and receipt by its deadline. Keep original condition, components and packaging; a 15% fee applies to changed condition and shipping costs are non-refundable. Confirm the exact order’s entitlement before testing. Samsung’s 2TB 990 EVO Plus still displays $579.99 and an out-of-stock label. The 2TB T7 Shield displays $574.99, but its stock/cart signals do not settle purchase availability or delivery/pickup at your address. A nearby 4TB out-of-stock label does not establish the 2TB variant’s status. Treat its orderability as unknown; neither Samsung route is a cleared obtainable alternative without the exact order check.

Against the historical Apple list upgrades below, the displayed external gaps are $300.01 for an M6 2TB route, $50.01 for an M5 Pro 2TB route and $450.01 for an M5 Pro 4TB route. These are arithmetic on different purchase arrangements, not confirmed current savings: reprice the exact Apple configuration and external drive’s delivered total. The September table and chart remain dated history.

Apple announced the M6 Mac mini with 256GB of storage at a $899 U.S. starting price and Sept. 22, 2026, availability. The M5 Pro model starts with 512GB for $1,699. Every larger internal drive is chosen and paid for at checkout. The alternative is a smaller internal drive plus an external SSD for the bulky files.

Historical route comparison, Sept. 15

Route Who it fits Extra cost over the base model The catch
Pay Apple for a larger internal drive Anyone who wants one box with nothing to plug in, and M5 Pro buyers who need about 1TB M6 $200-$1,000; M5 Pro $300-$3,800 Apple charges $0.51-$0.78 per added gigabyte
Buy a smaller drive and add an external SSD Photo and video libraries, local AI model files, game and virtual machine images, archives $287.99-$1,199.98 for 1TB to 4TB at the prices below Another box and cable; speed depends on the port and enclosure
Use a drive or NAS you already own Archives, finished projects and files that can load more slowly $0 Apple doesn’t support a Photos library on a network drive

At Sept. 15 prices, the external route saved the most on large drives. Those figures, including the old $400.01 M6 2TB gap, are the historical comparison in the table and chart below. The Oct. 11 OWC asks above narrow that gap; verify Apple’s configured total and the drive’s delivered price before acting. The M5 Pro’s $300 step to 1TB was cheaper than every fast external 1TB option priced in September; the slower Samsung USB 3.2 T7 Shield was the exception on price, without the same speed.

  • M6, 2TB or more of files: compare the configured Apple total with a delivered external-drive total. At the Oct. 11 OWC display price, a ready-made 2TB Express 1M2 is $300.01 below the historical $1,000 Apple upgrade; it also adds a second physical drive and cable.
  • M6, about 1TB: a close call for a fast drive. The Sept. 15 OWC 1TB ask was $469.99, $30.01 below the historical Apple $500 step; recheck the exact drive and checkout total. The Samsung 990 EVO Plus DIY path should not be counted while its maker page says out of stock.
  • M5 Pro, 1TB: Apple’s historical $300 upgrade step is cheaper than the fast external 1TB options in the September comparison; recheck the configurator before ordering.
  • M5 Pro, 2TB or more: the Oct. 11 OWC 80G displayed asks are only $50.01 below the historical $800 Apple step at 2TB and $450.01 below its $1,800 step at 4TB, before checkout costs. Decide whether an external drive and cable still suit the work.

Historical Apple list upgrade amounts

Mac mini Storage Upgrade price Added storage Per added GB
M6, $899 base 256GB Included — —
M6 512GB $200 256GB $0.78
M6 1TB $500 744GB $0.67

M5 Pro 1TB $300 488GB $0.61
M5 Pro 2TB $800 1,488GB $0.54
M5 Pro 4TB $1,800 3,488GB $0.52
M5 Pro 8TB $3,800 7,488GB $0.51

These are Apple list prices. The upgrade prices are from Daring Fireball’s configuration rundown, and the starting prices are from Apple’s announcement. The M6 tops out at 2TB, according to Apple’s technical specifications. Confirm the total in Apple’s configurator before ordering.

Larger steps cost less per gigabyte, but the M6’s 2TB upgrade still costs $1,000. Memory is a separate charge: Apple’s memory upgrades cost $25 per gigabyte, and unlike the drive, memory cannot be added later at any price — our guide to how much memory to order works through that choice with a free check on the Mac you already own.

Historical external-drive prices, Sept. 15

A bare NVMe drive needs an enclosure. OWC also sells its enclosures assembled with a drive inside. Samsung’s T7 Shield is a ready-made portable SSD with a slower interface.

Manufacturer store prices on Sept. 15, before tax and shipping, from the Samsung 990 EVO Plus, Samsung T7 Shield, OWC Express 1M2 and OWC Express 1M2 80G pages. Samsung’s store showed the 1TB and 2TB 990 EVO Plus and the 4TB T7 Shield as out of stock. OWC showed its enclosure-only prices as sale prices, $31 and $69.01 off. Enclosure combinations are our sums. None of these are Amazon prices.

At 2TB, the external options work out to $0.29-$0.36 per gigabyte. Apple’s upgrades to 2TB cost $0.54-$0.57 per added gigabyte.

What more storage adds to a Mac mini: Apple upgrade vs. OWC ready-made external SSD Horizontal bars drawn to one dollar scale show what each Mac mini costs above its base model for more storage. M6, starting at 256GB: Apple charges $500 for 1TB and $1,000 for 2TB and does not offer 4TB; OWC’s Express 1M2 USB4 drives cost $469.99, $599.99 and $1,049.99. M5 Pro, starting at 512GB: Apple charges $300 for 1TB, $800 for 2TB and $1,800 for 4TB; OWC’s Express 1M2 80G drives cost $529.99, $679.99 and $1,129.99. An external drive adds to the internal drive rather than replacing it. Apple U.S. list upgrade prices and OWC store prices on Sept. 15, 2026, rounded to whole dollars on the bars. Apple storage upgrade OWC ready-made external SSD M6 Mac mini, starts at 256GB 1TB 2TB 4TB M5 Pro Mac mini, starts at 512GB 1TB 2TB 4TB $500 $470 $1,000 $600 Not offered by Apple $1,050 $300 $530 $800 $680 $1,800 $1,130 $0 $900 $1,800 Cost above each base model. M6 rows use OWC’s 40Gb/s Express 1M2, which matches the M6’s Thunderbolt 4 ports. M5 Pro rows use the 80Gb/s Express 1M2 80G; OWC listed its 8TB version at $2,199.99. An M5 Pro buyer who accepts 40Gb/s-class speed pays $469.99 for OWC’s 1TB drive, still more than Apple’s $300, or $599.99 for 2TB, $200.01 less than Apple.

The external drive adds to the internal one. An $899 M6 with OWC’s 2TB drive has 2.256TB in total for $1,498.99; Apple’s 2TB configuration has 2TB for $1,899.

What your ports limit

Port M6 M5 Pro
Three rear USB-C ports Thunderbolt 4, up to 40Gb/s Thunderbolt 5, up to 120Gb/s
Two front USB-C ports USB 3, up to 10Gb/s USB 3, up to 10Gb/s

Source: Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications. Our Mac mini desk setup guide covers the same ports for displays and older models.

Plug a fast external SSD into a rear port. OWC rates its 40Gb/s Express 1M2 at 3,189MB/s on Apple silicon Macs but 990MB/s on a 10Gb/s USB-C connection, so a front port gives up most of the enclosure’s rated speed.

OWC rates the Express 1M2 80G at more than 6,000MB/s on Thunderbolt 5 and USB4 80Gb/s hosts and up to 3,800MB/s on Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 40Gb/s. Only the M5 Pro has Thunderbolt 5 ports. The historical September enclosure gap was $61. The Oct. 11 catalog displays $169.99 for the 80G empty enclosure and $88.99 for the Express 1M2, an $81 arithmetic gap before checkout costs; an M6 does not reach the 80G headline rating.

Samsung rates the T7 Shield at up to 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write. That rating fits within the front ports’ 10Gb/s.

These are manufacturer ratings, not measurements on either Mac mini. Apple’s announced availability date was Sept. 22, 2026; elapsed time does not establish transfer speed on your exact host and drive.

What should stay on the internal drive

macOS, your apps and anything you need with the external drive unplugged belong on the internal drive. To see what your current Mac uses, open System Settings, then General, then Storage.

  • Starting up from an external drive. Apple documents installing macOS on an external drive and starting up from it. On a Mac with Apple silicon, Apple says to connect the drive to any compatible port except the DFU port during installation, and it says the installation is specific to that Mac model. We haven’t tested it on the new minis and don’t count it as a reason to buy less internal storage.
  • Photos libraries can move. Apple says the external drive must use APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with “Ignore ownership on this volume” selected. Apple rules out Time Machine backup drives, removable devices such as SD cards and USB flash drives, and drives shared over a network or cloud service. If you use iCloud Photos, set the moved library as the System Photo Library.
  • Backups need their own space. Apple recommends a Time Machine disk with at least twice your Mac’s storage capacity, used only for backups. Our backup drive size table matches each Mac mini storage tier to a drive. An external drive holding the only copy of a library is not a backup.

A NAS or network share can hold archives and finished projects, but by Apple’s rules it can’t hold your Photos library.

Where to buy

Start with what you own. An SSD from an older setup can hold archives and libraries at its own rated speed. Keep it separate from your Time Machine disk, and use a rear port if it’s rated above 10Gb/s.

Apple’s upgrade: configure a Mac mini at Apple. For an M5 Pro with 1TB, it was the least expensive fast option we priced.
